Totó La Momposina

Totó La Momposina was a Colombian singer and dancer from Talaigua, whose work carried the musical traditions of Colombia’s Caribbean coast to international audiences. Raised in a family of musicians, she formed her own group in 1968 and began touring internationally in the 1970s. Her repertoire brought together cumbia, bullerengue and related Afro-Colombian traditions. Her appearances at WOMAD led to recordings with Real World, including La Candela Viva. She received the WOMEX Award in 2006 and a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. Her recordings continue to circulate through later reinterpretations, including the Docok rework of La Candela Viva heard in Mario Ranieri’s Studioset 009.
